  • HOW TO LOUNGE WITH THE HIMALAYA? A GUIDE.

INSPIRATION Ways to Lounge with the Himalaya and why it can be an impactful recuperation technique for any traveler. From an easy plan to easy time 31 August 2022 Complimentary Ebook Guide Download Recreation that creates personal impact and works. Even for the most self care conscious person, lounging or idle time sometimes is often not given enough credit due. With a maturing era of information overdose, the inaccuracies and peculiarities add extra weightiness to things that seem not so futuristic or life-giving in general. But there are ways to encourage that sense of lightness and inner rejuvenation, "travel is one of them, it is life-connecting." In India, the Himalaya is known for its deep history to life promoting elixirs. The ancient practice of self care, including the organic practice of meditation, promises to hold that level of lightness needed by most of us today. It maintains the capacity to activate a new lease of life and it still continues to replenish the modern era as we know it. For our readers that ever wondered how much energy the brain uses, as described by Harvard, "it is the most energy demanding organ in our body" approximately 20% loosely speaking. At the level of recuperation and rejuvenation meditational practices are yet to be beaten and of course this is just one aspect of any meditative practice as they pertain to more than just physical life. Meditations yet can be misunderstood as a form of escapism, that they are not. Quite simply its core purpose is to encourage well being and a sense of inner freedom in all respects. When applied well, the core purpose of self care positively influences all spheres of life and that includes the sometimes encumbersome responsibilities which we all face at some point or another during our life journey. For numerous reasons, the Himalaya, has been a “go to" destination for many over centuries including people worldwide, whatever their journey. There is a magnetism that pulls you towards the Himalaya, its beauty and culture makes it a perfect destination for the boutique traveller. We explore the valuable activity of what some call “Easy Time” - Lounging with the Himalaya . AS THE LOCALS DO And there they were connected... Visiting the mountain towns of India in the North, it's not rare to see the locals sitting in and around open spaces lined with rich greenery. The Indian Himalaya is bordered with Deodar (Himalayan Cedar), pine trees, wild mountain shrub and eye catching wildflowers. At first glance it is obvious that there exists a sense of harmonious balance between the 'inactively active components of nature' and without trying it makes you stop and breathe. What seems frivolous is actually easy recharge time, one that is not thought about much but just is. Some may beg to differ that Himalayan local life is different from city scape, that maybe so but actually after taking care of their responsibilities that even the toughest sports enthusiast may shed a bead of sweat upon, that natural instinct of free time is perhaps most celebrated by both young and old here. Free time is something that is a gift given to the people by the Himalaya, they are called upon to do so and we join in. Best time to Lounge in the open air? There are a few things to consider, like, the season, you, where and where you plan to stay. PLAN EASY This may seem counterintuitive when talking about free time, but to make the most of ‘free time’ feeling comfortable is a good way to start. While you may not want to over burden your mind with a plan or long lists, consider a more flowy option like the following; What time you intend on lounging? Do you want to catch the sunrise across the Himalaya? Perhaps auto responders for email? A few essentials if any? Consider reading whilst you lounge? Why not take the inspiration up a notch and read? The famous Indian writer, RabindraNath Tagore was inspired by his travels in the Himalaya which helped his state of clarity translate into some of the world's most admired literature. A point to consider. CLOTHING THAT WORKS FOR YOU Perhaps an easy one but if you plan on not doing much other than lounge, being comfortable usually makes your experience more richer whatever that maybe. Clothing probably will work to your advantage if you take into consideration the season. It would help in making a good choice for yourself. Here are a few easy to consider clothing tips which will help you experience open air lounging in a more connected way. We've listed the seasons of the Himalaya but of course nature is nature. THE HIMALAYA SEASONS SPRING > snow, crisp, cool, can be sunny with bright skies, fresh air, cold/warm wind, average temperature 12-21°C approx, late February - April. SUMMER > hot, dry, cool patches, bright, cooler evenings, hazy skies, rare rain, snow peaks visible, average temperature 21-35°C approx, April - July. MONSOON > humid, plush, damp air, wet greenery, rich green, mist, clouds, clear views, thunder, some sun, snow peaks visibly clear, average temperature 15-22°C approx, late July - September. AUTUMN > dry, clear, colder months with sunshine, outdoor wear ideal, clear views, snow peaks, average temperature 13-18°C approx, September - mid November. WINTER > coldest months heading into December - late January, snowfall can be expected, pre snowfall generally freezing temperatures, sunny, clear. Outdoor wear would be a must have, average temperature 6-10°C approx, late November - February. Dress up or dress down it really depends on you but do take the season into consideration whatever you decide to choose. DETOX ON CLARITY The best thing about being with the Himalaya is the natural essence of clarity and detoxification that it promotes without trying too hard. It is quite literally a “holy grail” for promoting well being once you’re there. Think slow and paced. It is the perfect place and space for anyone with demanding lifestyle patterns that want to recuperate with an opposite approach. Partly to due to the height and openness of Dalhousie the energy feels, well, more lighter in comparison to the other popular mountain towns of India. Dalhousie is positioned in the North of India and touches approximately 6000+ ft above sea level which sort of makes sense once you experience it for yourself referring to an "energy cleanse." Lounging Tip - techniques; sit or lay comfortably, take a deep breath inhale and gently exhale out, repeat at your own comfortable capacity. And, reset the balance of your eyes with the soothing hues of nature, gaze & lounge. The natural environment can help restore lost moisture and vitality to those techno-tired eyes, a form of natural light medicine and without any side effects. Other considerations: you may want to keep a diary nearby as you never know when inspiration may strike. Enjoy the freedom of the Himalaya. REVITALIZING SIESTA Sleeping well is necessary for overall human vitality, it's a proven science by mother nature. When rested we tend to feel a little more better and ready for a thriving day ahead. The natural process of sleeping is something that we share with other species of nature including animals, plants and trees. It is “right up there” with nutrition. What better than endless views, pure clear air, a comfortable lounge and free time to initiate a little shut eye here and there during a day catered to lounging? Add some rhythm to your inner lounge experience and prepare for a little Himalaya outdoor nap with some relaxing music or nature sounds from our complimentary music atelier. Each month the Explorer selects a range of music adding to the flavour of the ultimate walk or the ultimate lounge. You can find a complimentary playlist below; Complimentary Music Atelier Easy listening compilation Alternatively stay connected with the heartbeat of the Himalaya and let the sounds of the natural landscape revitalise your daytime siesta. The Himalaya has its own melody each season. LONG TEAS & WATER COCKTAILS Lounging and sipping on a long drink are a result of human natures development of aesthetics over time. In some cases they have become a very elaborate affair. Sometimes the preparation and subsequent after effects are not always considered. The Explorer has taken a different point of view, working with nature to produce that perfect lounge accompanied with a good long drink. What we sometimes forget that a good drink doesn’t always have to be alcohol. There are so many other ways to enjoy a drink of leisure such as our recommendation of the long tea or water cocktail. Too fancy? Nothing else, a bottle of mineral water will serve you nicely whilst you lounge around with the Himalaya. • THE SECRET TO WALKING IN THE HIMALAYA?

In his essay “At the Himalayas," the great writer RabindraNath Tagore detailed, “I sometimes imagine myself as a foreigner, and only then do I discover how much is to be seen.” When was the last time that you ‘walked?’ Where were you walking? Were you walking solo or with others? Have you ever walked in the Himalaya? Lets Walk. The Himalayas are known to most of us as a stunning set of mighty mountains that hold deep geographical and spiritual importance for India and the world. Yes, but this aside, they are also an indulgent reservoir of ancient techniques which act as an elixir for the modern day person. One of these ‘elixirs’ is the understated art of walking in a natural environment. With seasonal shifts and plush green landscape comes the possibility to invigorate and uplift. It's a sort of a “non alcoholic cocktail” in the traditional sense. Yet it holds its own intoxicating, life-promoting effect and one that returns on time invested many fold. When asked about the Himalaya, the following phrases that crown the Himalaya in all its beauty are many but few; invigorating, restoring, balancing, exciting, challenging, relentless, gentle and romantic. "With the stark contrasts of the man made world, the romantic point of view helps to smoothen the sharp edges, making the ride all the more valuable." Bespoke boutique travel is not just about high quality or well placed interior. Location and experience matter, and a unique travel hospitality-philosophy can be like water to a dry well. Guncha’s philosophy is deeply connected with the boutique lifestyle. The beauty about ‘lifestyle’ is that it offers a world of many experiences some suited and some that depend on the Traveller. In this Himalayan EXplorer article we pay homage to “walking, walking in nature, as well as with nature.” And the crowning glory, Our luxurious Himalaya’s. Lets walk. “The Ultimate Walk” Walking involves both physical movement as well as energetically shifting our state of mind and all that comes with it. When most of our movement through the world is automated, human nature is prone to missing out on self discoveries. Walking too is prone to this predicament. This is something a lot of us experience in our day to day activity. Automation is necessary in some respects but we beg to differ in the case of nature. Nature is never automated and never has been yet maintains a cycle of replenishing life season by season. "Pausing the automatic motion to switch on the walk" For the naturally inclined, it brings about a state of pure flow internally and externally. We call this “Himalayan Flow”, in context of our location. Flow because it influences human well being positively or in modern terms it is a friend of good “self care.” And, much more than the human mind can imagine. Taking this further, we say that Indian philosophies are the "Gold & Diamonds" of Self Care from terrain, techniques to how to eat well for life. These ancient forms of practice are not new ideas but have been practiced in India for thousands of years. Region to region it varys. Today information is everywhere but authentic deep knowledge, wisdom and application of a discipline is what brings real benefit to others. All forms of Travel intimately is interlinked with the human need for well being through exploration, recuperation, adventure, playtime and of course a little bit of Pizazz. Given our current day predicament, as the earth matures, holistic self care and rejuvenation are even more necessary practices for living the good life. "'Balance is the name of the game'. 'Walk, walk, and walk with pleasure.'" At Guncha, walking is a lifestyle practice. A much loved, tried and tested method that promotes a sense of rejuvenation. Many of our guests over the years have intertwined in and out of Dalhousie in awe of its royal views, lively inhabitants and shape shifting climate. Guncha’s founders, our Grandfather and Grandmother would particularly dress for their morning or evening Himalayan walk. From pearls to silk clothing, a great set of bespoke loafers and casual-formal dressed staff member that would eagerly await for -The Walk. It was was a sort of “ YSL Haute Couture street style at its best.” A way to celebrate the beauty of life through self adornment in a healthy balance. Predominantly, a salute to nature of which we are a part of. It was self care ritual that was formal as well as informal and bore many a benefit year on year. There was a technique to it. The technique involved walking, swaying but with an openness. 40 years later this ritual is all the more relevant and one that needs a little more perspective and attention in modern times. Dalhousie although a petite town would see and still does welcome travellers from India as well as from across the world. Because of this it has a cosmopolitan air to it especially in busy seasons. A place where you can detox and replenish by just being there. “A stiff glass of the Himalaya with or without ice." We say. As with all things in life, all things have many facets and whether we experience or innovate a particular facet really depends on if we can perceive that part of reality. Walking is one activity which may be an existential limb but it is much more than mere movement, although it is. Walking is a universal language that is a part of every place. In context of self care, it is the first go to therapeutic advice packaged commonly as, “Walking recommended” or “take a walk" especially in mature economies where natural living is becoming a luxury commodity. In the some parts of the world it is “advised” but in other areas it is “a primary mode of existence" that has not been forgotten. Shall we frolic or not? Interesting comparatives, we leave the rest as food for thought. The purpose behind this article “The Ultimate Walk” was to step a little further leaving the cliche behind. To try and touch some of the other facets. There is a vast treasure chest of experience in the Indian Himalaya and it’s unique for each traveler. What’s more, the Himalaya forms a bond with each traveler which walks with you throughout life. Quote, "When a man moves away from nature, his heart. becomes hard" - Native American Proverb. "A Series of compositions - The Ultimate Walk" To capture its intoxicating spirit we commissioned a series of video with select compositions of nature and uplifting sounds which can be enjoyed from wherever you are. Of course not the same as the real thing but certainly a romantic glimpse of it. “The High End appeal of Meditative Techniques” The Ultimate Walk series provides insight into what we call “walking in luxury” or “The Ultimate Walk” bringing you the spirit of the Himalaya as known to us and our loyal guests for over twenty years. To share “The Ultimate Walk” the compositions (we hope) may awaken a sense of natures spirit. Sightly on the romantic side, however by choice. The Ultimate Walk, is an Immersive Experience that embodies the spirit of the Himalaya of India. Elegant, vibrant and ever changing coupled with a romantic outlook on travel, the Himalaya are a complete destination vision for the traveller. What to consider when selecting your stay? Compared to the more larger destinations dotted around the Himalayan towns of North India, Dalhousie is on the bijou side yet there is a deeply reassuring sense of boundaryless space that still exists in and around the town. In today's demanding lifestyles, a sense of openness and unapologetic space is a much needed requirement for rebalancing and reawakening dormant energy. We could suggest that this is one of the core principles of travel and the reasons why travel is so uplifting to the human spirit. Embracing the hospitality of open air rooftops and terraces that face luxuriously panoramic views surrounding Dalhousie is a great way to experience a natural upliftment. There's so much more to Dalhousie than just a quick getaway. The beauty of Dalhousie is that it is personal to everyone which is in contrast to the more manufactured surroundings. National and international travelers are 'spoilt for choice' with the long established and new variety of hotels and stays that are available in Dalhousie. Eventually the choice comes down to a few key points that may be considered before the traveler decides to take that break. We've made a list of our top 5 questions that may help in supporting your choice, find out more below. "Travel is Romantic," says Guncha, "it can change everything in a matter of seconds, romantic because you are being romanced by life." Dalhousie although small is rich in spiritual romance and a sense of "higher vibe frequency" flows through its landscape (no pun intended). This is apparent in its foundational fabric from Pahari, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Christian and other communities coinciding in the spirit of natural friendship. Perhaps nature's response to the dramatic contrast of the divisive times of Imperial India. It is like a real time celebration of the diverse beauty of India set in the most stunning backdrop. "They still keep it real here and that is glamorous within itself especially in our current times where trust in life can be easily swayed." "It makes perfect for re-establishing a sense of yes in oneself. There's plenty to experience and enjoy." Speaking of the Himalaya, the powerful heartbeat of the Himalaya's plays a major role in keeping its locals and visitors uplifted naturally. It is effortless. Without trying too hard, the traveler can experience a shift in energy and mountain air likely has a large hand to play in the nothing less than miraculous. Can we place a figure of value on the life giving benefits of nature? To which we answer, "touch the sky." "It's sort of like an 'Oxygen cocktail' perfect for those that are seeking a spirit boost of a different kind. " Whilst on a refreshing stroll, there are a number of cultures and communities that can be seen going about their daily affairs, from saffron robes to cloud white gowns and beautiful turbans that resemble individual crowns carried with grace. It really is quite beautiful. Walking down Gandhi Chowk towards the walk, grab a refreshing tea or coffee from one of the kiosks, stop and take a look around. Across the board whether directly or indirectly, travel, all comes down to a compelling urge to indulge in playtime and that is personal to each individual. "Travel is not just 'a change' it is a form of self care and has been since time existed." In modern day context, the following may sound familiar when we experience the need for a change of environment: For adventure and play. Something tells me I need a break. Change of environment. Planned holidays with family. Personal celebrations. To explore and discover. Love to learn. Love life. Despite the occasion for travel, the umbrella that holds our reasons for travel together ultimately points to an inner urge for a sense of well-being ie; self care and this directs us towards the type of travel that we may prefer to experience at any given point in time. We can soundly say, "travel is deeply connected to the spirit of freedom in its physical manifesto." We've put together a checklist that is a part of our complimentary HIMALAYAN ExPLORER E-MAG. For more on travel centered around well being, readers can subscribe and stay connected for complimentary updates. THE TOP 5 What is the reason for your stay? How much time do you plan to stay at the location? Are you traveling alone or with company? What is more important to you indoors or outdoors or both? Post travel what do you expect to achieve from your stay? "It's probably time that we thought of travel in a different way, it makes more sense that the benefits of your experience carry through when you return back to daily life. 'Making an experience not nostalgic but everlasting.' " At Guncha, we like to think of it as lifetime return on an investment, one in which it is a pleasure to come back to daily life with a new sense of perspective, empowered. "It's like you've been taken into the arms of the Himalaya and invigorated. 'Repurpose,' onwards and forwards." Over the years Dalhousie has developed into a busy summer retreat as the word has spread far and wide. Although it has always been a hotspot for spending cool summers under the beautiful patronage of the Himalaya even before Indian Independence from British occupancy. One of the reasons why is due to its location and multi cultural heritage considering its size, it is a jewel in a crown. Previously, Dalhousie was most within reach for travelers where cost was accessible, transport available and general know-how about the location. Today, this is not the case, as more and more of new India expands its reach towards destinations that were once only available to bureaucrats and wealthy travelers. Guncha, the estate holds Indian and French heritage. The view is crisp and dreamy. With each season it brings its own character. Could Guncha be a choice for your stay? For location we are known as ICONIC, since the mid 90's Guncha has welcomed many admirers from bureaucrats, nationals, international travelers and of course the Indian Film industry. • 5 GREAT ACTIVITIES THAT YOU CAN ENJOY WHEN STAYING AT GUNCHA AT NO EXTRA COST?

Pictured above views from a right angle on Guncha's #terraces. At Guncha we have tapped into over two decades of our experience in the #Himalaya. We dug a little deeper into the simple pleasures that are often overlooked by our technological world yet it is also what the technological world is indirectly based on, that is, the #geniusofnature. Admittedly, there is a thick of information that hovers over our modern day world, some useful and some... not so much. Most of us don't realise that when inundated with vast amounts of information everyday, unwillingly our inner intelligence, which we also know as, awareness, clarity, presence, tends to take a back seat. Something perhaps that we can all relate to on some level? Like most things it can lead to an inner build up of energy in the form of unsolicited emotions, biases and unwanted feelings. Sometimes you can't quite catch it because it does not carry a material form visible to the naked eye, it is rather felt or experienced. At #Guncha, we know that taking a break can completely change one's perspective and outlook. By doing so it can help us rekindle our inner sense of being, leaving us in a better place than we may have been before. However, to reap the benefits of this 'genius of nature' it does require one small key, a willingness or openness towards it. So to give you a few ideas, we came up with some simple yet great ways to reconnect with the genius of nature around you and within you. So why do we consider taking a break? Or a change of perspective? Above all reasons whether obvious or not, human motivation is towards a sense of well being and it is seeked in a number of ways. We take a #vacation for a number of reasons both intentional and sometimes just by a sense of need. Individuals may just want a change of scenery that offers therapeutic benefits, or in the case of professionals and business persons intentionally pausing from their daily activities to bring about rest and recuperation which can help bring clarity and inspiration. Similarly, families may take vacations to build stronger bonds amongst one another and explore new horizons. Reasons are many and can apply to anyone. These are just a few examples why guests holiday at Guncha or holiday in general. Martin Luther King, Jr said, "To other countries, I may go as a tourist, but to India, I come as a pilgrim." From great persons such as Rabindranath Tagore of India to Martin Luther King of America, India, the land rich in natural beauty, spiritual wisdom, vibrant and diverse, has been and remains a spiritual anchor for many across the world. The Himalayas play a significant role in the development of human physical as well as conscious evolution and continues to do so today. Some interesting facts about Dalhousie that are known to few, Rabindranath Tagore stayed in Dalhousie with his father in his younger days and as cited, was taken aback by the region's deep gorges, alpine forests, and mossy streams and waterfalls (ref). Here are 5 ways to enjoy your time when staying at Guncha. #1 YOGA & STRETCH ON YOUR TERRACE One of the best ways to reap the benefits of being in the himalaya’s fresh air and vibrant atmosphere is to stay in a place that can offer open space for you to enjoy. When was the last time you felt the benefits of a simple stretch without being in a gym? Stretching your arms wide and far towards the sky or towards the magnificent Himalaya in front of you? Step 1; pick a time most suited to you Step 2; wear appropriate gear ie something comfortable that lets your body move easily Step 3; request a yoga mat or bring your own Step 4; place the mat on your spot of choice at your room terrace Step 5; perhaps give the technology a break and allow the natural balancing sounds of the Himalaya to flow with your stretches and deep breathing. You can take a preview of what a morning sunrise sounds like by viewing this short clip filmed on our terrace during the monsoon. Step 6; practice some deep breathing Step 7; after your practice, enjoy a refreshing light tea or plain water Yoga & stretch on your terrace can be practiced individually or with your friends and family. It is a great way to build strong relationships with your loved ones as well as a perfect bit of wisdom for the children to take away from their holiday. Not to mention the many simple and therapeutic benefits this practice has on us. Top tips for #1 We have a range of rooms with terraces that offer different angles of the panoramic view. When in the Himalaya you want to enjoy its open air as much as possible as we spend a lot of our time occupied in either technology or in indoor spaces (although in India this is not necessarily the case). There is nothing quite like deep breathing, meditation and yoga during the morning sunrise on the Himalaya, the same can be said for sunset. You are saluting the creator and all things life! Shop the India Cap! #2 TEACH THE KIDS ABOUT BALANCE A Guncha's favourite! If we can give anything to the children, may we give them the power to keep well. From wellness come all other physical comforts, whether that is material possessions, ambitions or simply leading an inspired life, whether the sky is your limit or further beyond. At Guncha, we see wellness as individual inner power and this power can be kept well through numerous ways. One of those ways is to be in tune with the natural elements, to inculcate the capacity of self balance and wellness. So why not share with the children what significance balance plays in our lives? And what better way to do it than at the backdrop of the mighty Himalaya? Here's a mini activity that can be played with the kids during your stay; Ask the kids to write a short paragraph about what they experienced when they look at the mountains. Perhaps they can share their paragraphs at dinner time. This unforced yet creative mutual exchange instils a sense of connectivity amongst the kids and members of family. A great activity to share on the last night before you head back home perhaps? Top tip; equilibrium and equality, harmony and strength are common metaphors used for the Himalayas, for the kids to inculcate a sense of strength within themselves and for others, lighting the flame of equality within the family is a great guiding force. For those individuals with strong roots, rooted in spirit, limits do not exist. Those individuals not only reach unsurmountable life success but also lift many up along with them. Empower the spirit and life is lived as high as the Himalaya. Play with the kids! #3 MORNING SUNRISE - EVENING SUNSETS By far, the most popular thing to do at Hotel Guncha is to watch the morning sunrise rising from the mountains ahead and the evening dusk of golden rays dancing on the pine trees. ACTIVATE THE SUN WITHIN YOU! Take your favourite cap you may want to wear it. For the non early risers, check the time of sunrise the night before and set your morning so that you don’t miss it. Wake up just in time for the sunrise Watch and take it all in. Top Tips for #3; It is worth taking a few sensational photographs of the sun. If you're looking for a great cap why not take a look at Guncha’s CONCEPT STORE and find the right one! #4 AFTERNOON TEA, EVENING DINNERS & TABLE STORIES? Here at Guncha, we know that simple yet profound #experiences can be everything. Experiences can also be life changing it really depends on an individuals perspective. Whether you are visiting the Himalaya on your own or with friends and family, time stands still here. TEA RITUALS Get comfortable, enjoy a long afternoon tea on the terrace, enjoy a book, nature watch from your terrace or enjoy quality one-one time with loved ones. MOON STARS DINNERS Prepare for dinner? Dinner in the open air with distant lights shining like stars in the Valley ahead. At night the #Himalaya sky is a deep blue sapphire with twinkling lights that look like stars. Guncha is situated in a #perfect location, not too remote and not too busy. Make your dinners a memorable experience by enjoying the Himalaya at night. Perhaps dress for the occasion. Does the moon make an appearance at Guncha? Yes it does and it really depends on the moon phase as well as night time weather. QUALITY BONDING TIME Take the time to just be, to self correct and to shorten the distance between relationships, a great way to do this is, quality time listening and understanding each other. Let the kids share their stories and the wise ones spread their tales of strength, wisdom and life experiences. Create harmony and equality in your relationships with one another. The benefits last a lifetime! #5 DISCOVER WALKING AGAIN? ‘As you start to walk out on the way, the way appears’ Rumi Taking a walk in the Himalaya is quite an experience. There is nothing quite like it. From Guncha there is a lot to discover just by taking a walk. Whatever pace you wish to go at whether a stroll, a brisk walk, or uphill gentle jog (not for the faint hearted), walking can do so much for even the most hard wired. Experience it, absorb it, spot the local culture, stumble across 'open air temples' which have been supported by locals as a mark of respect to creation. The therapeutic benefits are plentiful, we will detail more on the next articles about the therapeutic benefits of walking. • HOTEL GUNCHA, DALHOUSIE INDIA, HIMALAYA. NATURE, A STORY OF SANCTUARY?

“Guncha's view is panoramic, it is invigorating.” Is there a story behind Guncha's location? Guncha's location was discovered in the early 1980s by an Indian business family, originally as a standalone estate for a private sanctuary. The family roots were in a variety of sectors, 1960/70s Indian cinema distribution, manufacturing and Indian law. Due to a wide network of activities, private hospitality became an integral part of their daily affairs as prominent persons frequently joined them for informal gatherings. A part of the family's innate interests was in spiritual explorations and towards the natural elements. Nature was seen as a powerful guiding hand in the overall development of the individual, it was a reminder of the bigger picture of life. Apart from trade and industry, creativity was considered closely linked to spirituality, specifically fine arts, modern art and music. They were revered as a form of nature's essence holding the capacity to bring transformation and invigoration. The discovery of Guncha's location brought it all together, Guncha was the jewel in the crown. Standing tall with the Himalaya Guncha's location was observed as a reflection of natural art that came with its own masterpiece of music, the sounds of natural elements. In each moment you can experience the sounds of nature, a live immersive work of art. Guncha was a tall open vision, unsympathetically free, a universal masterpiece that invigorated everyone. Although there were numerous pocket locations in Dalhousie, yet the openness and accessibility of Guncha was unmatched. The location had an automatic pull towards it. Love at first sight? Guncha held a timeless promise, open and limitless with a panoramic setting that saw golden sunrises to deep bronze sunsets. The location had its own pulse that played to the tune of whatever mood the mountains took. Over time, not only did Guncha attract admirers but there was always new wildlife that visited the estate frequently and to this day still does. Commonly seen were the Indian black bear, Langoor, Himalaya birds of paradise, deer, mountain cat etc. It was by continuous admiration of private guests and visitors that evidently led to the creation of Hotel Guncha, set within Guncha estate. "The magnitude of the location can only really be experienced when you stand facing the Himalaya. You can feel the mountains, they have a natural eco, alive and buzzing." When was Hotel Guncha opened? Hotel Guncha is a panoramic location with a view that provides unobstructed vision across the mountain valley. The 13 room hotel first opened its doors to guests in mid 90’s. Hotel Guncha is famous for its sunrise and sunset that can be seen all in one frame. The estate already held two existing mini stone chalets which were the homes of a Frenchman. Later the family built another private wooden chalet at the top roadside point within the estate for personal use. And thereafter, a few years later the hotel was created. The premises were constructed in a typical local vernacular architectural style using local tradesman and the exceptionally large terraces were created specifically so that guests could experience the valley ahead unobstructed. Today it is rare to find such large terraces in the newer more standardised hotels as vouched for by our guests. Hotel Guncha’s destination A place that inexplicably blurred boundaries between natural elements and man. In which a sort of heartbeat pulsates in the atmosphere with a natural cleansing effect. It is a peripheral area in which there is a sense of being one step closer to knowing the bigger picture of life. The location offered an abode of balance and a comprehensive mirror to its admirers. When you experience the Himalaya, you become one with its heartbeat, it is invigorating. What do you mean by the energy of the Himalaya? The himalayas of India have an ancient connectivity both metaphorically and spiritually in the Indian culture. They are held in high esteem as they mark the significance of a world different from what man has created, a bigger picture, all pervading. The Himalaya is alive. Each time you observe the view at Guncha it is different, every moment is new. It is an immersive experience and one that naturally invigorates. The energy, so to speak, is the experience that the Himalaya offers, it is an ever-changing frequency filled with great rejuvenation. We all need a little fine tuning now and again. Where did the name Guncha come from? The meaning of the name as far as known, was related to flowers-roses with an Urdu origin. S.S.Singhji was born in India Lahore, Jarawala prior to the partition of India, both he and his wife lived through the changing landscape of India’s independence. He spoke fluent Urdu which links the origins to the use of the name Guncha. Some have also defined the name as a bunch of flowers. The name was selected by the family for the entire estate which came to be known as Guncha estate marking two auspicious events, its discovery and simultaneously in the same year the birth of the first grandchild who was also named Guncha. Guncha ग़ुंचेغنچہ a bud, a rose-bud 'I'm going to Guncha, see you there' When did Guncha first open to guests as a hotel? Guncha Estate’s hotel area was named Hotel Guncha Siddhartha, an intimate 13 room hotel that opened its doors in the 1990’s under the vision of the family. In the 90’s newer hotels were few and most existing hotels had long standing establishment. Although the 90’s were not new to the internet yet in the Indian Himalaya it was a scarce commodity with only remote dial-up internet availability, the type that dialled via telephone and connected to the world-wide web through a number of continuous beeps. Guncha opened its premises to guests a decade before the technological upsurge of fast moving tech brands like Airbnb, Oyo and home stays were unheard of. Today, the hotel is predominantly known by the locals as Hotel Guncha. What is Hotel Guncha best known for? The hotel is set on the private family owned hillside which overlooks unobstructed views across the Pir Panjal Dhauladar mountain ranges of the Himalaya. Guncha is located in Dalhousie which is a district in Chamba in the state of Himachal Pradesh, India. The Mountain areas of North India are also known as hill stations and were popular destinations for summer retreats, a trend that became prominent from colonial India and one that continues today but with a more blended identity true to the free spirit of India. Hotel Guncha has exceptionally large terraces that were built for guests and travellers to make the experience of the location intimate. Whereby, the rooms open out towards the valley views and guests can walk outside straight from their rooms to enjoy their own morning mediation in tune with the sunrise, breakfast or simple stroll at their convenience. It is a rare find to enjoy such large spaces in the more newer hotels that have sprouted around Dalhousie over the last decade. One of our recent guests have said; “The view of the valley is really breathtaking, haven’t seen a hotel with a better view, the 4th star is for the view, go for balcony side room, you may get better hotels for the price but not the view” - Guncha’s Guest, MR. Dipin M What is Dalhousie? Dalhousie consists of five hills with an elevation of approximately 6,460 feet above sea level. The town was named after the Earl of Dalhousie during the colonial era of British - India during this time the destination became an iconic summer retreat. Before this, it was under the wing of native Maharaja’s of the area. “Dalhousie is a tourist place of international fame.
