  • WHAT IS AN ATMOSPHERIC BATH AND HOW TO TAKE ONE?

The sky and mountains are kindred companions of Guncha, a love that has grown year after year under the careful watch of the Himalaya. Now that more of the modern world is re-awakening to the importance of natural elements, it is reasonable to say that Guncha has been ahead of her time hosting a 41 year long friendship that has remained true with the Indian Himalaya. Known to few, loved by many is a phrase that we use to describe her relationship with guests. As with all things alive, change is a constant string that keeps life 'awake' which is true for both nature and for us humans. Most of us experience the changing seasons of nature everyday but don't really pay as much attention to the invaluable benefits of well being that she promotes. Have you ever experienced an 'energetic lift' from the gust of a fresh windy day? Most likely yes, whether you held that experience valuable or not depends on one's personal sense of presence and overall well-being. 'We are our own saviours', a saying that is far from popular belief. Yet a fact that remains part and parcel in the evolution of humankind is that our internal compass seeks ways, things and experiences that support us in feeling 'alive' and well. Because there is no life without you. Most of our made up worlds are examples of this yearning, but concrete environments miss one thing 'real life', take for example the innate heat of nature, the bioliveness of greenery or perhaps the breeze of freshly covered snow capped mountain peaks. Nature is alive and kicking. There are many ways to experience the benefits to spirit-mind-body when at the Himalaya's, one of them is an 'atmospheric bath.' “A Himalayan energy cleanse” The sensation of lightness and rejuvenation is one of the many ways nature takes care of us. Without us needing to do anything other than remaining open to atmospheric embrace, heavy energy is purified into a magical lightness. It is almost as though nature woke you up and revitalised your spirit knowing that you needed it. What is an atmospheric bath? A term loosely coined by Guncha in the early 2000's simply put is to bathe in bursts of seasonal changes. Guncha talks about the atmospheric bath as a natural spa undiscovered. By 'undiscovered' we mean that one may not be present to the benefits of their environment until, well, discovered. It is a matter of opening up to what already exists in the natural world and the easiest way to do so is to stand wide open and embrace natural surroundings. When guests arrive at Guncha, the first thing that catches the eye is the magnificent view of the valley, it is like a magnet. The rhythm of the Himalaya pulls you in to become at one with her. Naturally, it has a balancing effect, one that captivates even the most travelled individual. Nature's heartbeat unexpectedly synchronises yours with hers in which an unintentional inner alignment takes place and the benefits become physically apparent. Rhythmic breathing, pranayama, deep breath yoga are accepted the world over more so today than ever before. For the sceptics, science has experimented with numerous studies that talk about how environments have been proven to impact the rhythm of one's breath and therefore influencing overall well being. Human energy is deeply interlinked with the fluctuations of the seasons just as we experience day and night, it has purpose. In India seasonal changes have been celebrated since ancient era's because they hold an energetic capacity to invigorate, revitalise and replenish when prepared for. Given the opportunity, the individual can harness the synchronicity between seasonal changes that helps us to recycle old energy and replenish our internal battery. The Himalayas are the epitome of the free spirit. Here at Guncha, thanks to our location our guests are able to experience these seasonal changes, or as we say an atmospheric bath. Anyone wanting to fully immerse themselves in monsoon mist can do so from their private terrace or enjoy summertime lunch out on their terrace whilst taking in the Himalaya. The experience is priceless. When was the last time you took a 'no strings attached' deep breathe? How did you feel? How many seasons are there in Dalhousie Himalaya? There are five seasons of Dalhousie, Spring, Summer, Monsoon, Autumn and Winter and there is something unique to experience each time. It really depends on the type of stay you are looking for. We always say, the pioneering spirit knows no bounds, for such an individual each moment is priceless. Guncha's top floor rooms are some of the best in the 13 room property offering panoramic views of the valley ahead and large enough for individuals or families to spend valuable time together or individually. Why bathe in the environment? At Guncha taking in a little fresh breeze straight from the Himalayan Mountain ranges can be just what the spirit needed. The Himalayas geographically are an important part of India, from fertile soils, to rich landscape, vast and rich species of wildlife and fresh air that is clean and plentiful. It is a perfect location with unrivalled views. The beauty about the Himalayas is that you can experience the range of five seasons all from one location which allows a sort of 360 rejuvenation. And So, why not? ‘The freshness of Himalayan breeze is something else, it is as crisp as the snow capped peaks ahead' How to experience an atmospheric bath at Guncha? There are many ways to experience the Himalayas, however we say the personal the better. Here are some useful tips to help you along the way. It's recommended to take suitable clothing depending on the season and make a self assessment whether standing in the mist, rain or sun for a few minutes or more is something that would be of benefit to you. Dalhousie is a remote hill station with limited access to particular services, it is always sensible to bring any important daily use items that you may not be able to obtain from here. Image of Guncha's terraces ‘The Sun at Guncha is Magical, you are fully connected’ Sunbathing at Guncha A sun bath at Guncha is a little different in the typical sense of a swimsuit and beach. However, it is the same sun, that is bathed under whether you lay on a tropical beach or a Himalayan paradise. The degree to which the sun exposes itself and sheds its golden rays depends on which part of the earth you are on. It is timeless and holds its own experience in every moment. The view of the Sun at Guncha is no less than magical. From the morning golden sunrise in the East to the deep glimmering bronze sunset in the West, yes it can all be taken in here. So what does it feel like? A pure dose of unadulterated vitamin D synthesis? Well, the Sun has many more empirical benefits, queue the ‘surya namaskar.’ We would love to know your own experience soaking in the rays at Guncha, guests can reach out to us here and share their stories of the sun. The summer months can become hot even in the Himalaya yet due to the altitude and geographical location Himalaya summer time is much cooler than the tropical sultry heat of the other parts of India. It is fairly pleasant to enjoy under natural shade and becomes cool in the evenings. Our guests enjoy the sun at different times of the day because at each frequency there is a different atmosphere to absorb. It is common for our guests to enjoy their terraces, taking it all in individually or with family and friends. Also, a great way to energise the children and build stronger relationships. A sun bath at Guncha can uplift even the most tiredest spirit. The best way forward is to experience it for yourself. ‘I thought I was admiring the Moon but the Moon was admiring Me, she said I’m glad you came to see me’ Moon bathing at Guncha An open approach would be that nothing in nature is without purpose. Aesthetically the moon has always captivated humankind with her pearly silver beauty. If tidal waves have been seen to rise during the phases of the moon then as many notable gurus - teachers suggest human energy too has a synchronicity with the natural elements. At Guncha, when it does appear, the Moon is luminous and bright sitting in the beauty of the night. A great way to enjoy the energy of the moon is to simply see it. Our guests also prefer to take dinner under the stars enjoying the distant lights around the valley which resemble little stars dotted around the hills. Depending on your photographic skills you may even capture the majesty of the moon to share on your insta post? 'After a rainfall there are pure white clouds of mist dotted around the valley' Monsoon & Wind bath at Guncha One of the most surreal settings that you can experience is during the monsoon at Guncha. The rainy season although can become rather damp and cool however it is a picturesque setting. Prepared and you can see Pir Panjal in a completely different light besides the popular hot summer months. The air is as clear as a diamond after a rigorous rainfall. The magic of the rainy season is dreamy to say the least, guests can be completely engulfed in the passing mist pockets that move around with the breeze dotting in and around the hills, eventually clearing up or leading to a burst of rain. The rainfall spreads the scent of pine and deodar trees all around and the buzzing of Himalayan wildlife becomes even more prominent. Not everyone enjoys the rain but for those that do the experience is again priceless. Take it all in with a hot masala spiced tea with fragrant Indian spices. Of course the monsoon sees many terrain difficulties during the rains such as road slides however from years of relationship with the mountains, people understand that it is the side of the same coin. Much can be learnt from the periodic changes with a little preparedness. Should I book a stay during the rainy season?
